HISTORY OF WIND FLIGHT

Twenty some odd years ago when Gary asked me about getting into the Miniature horse business, I can’t tell you what my answer was.  I will tell you it’s not printable.  At the time we were heavily involved in The Arabian Horse Business and had little time to devote too much else.  But through several turns of fate we ended up showing a few Minis’ for our then new friends, Don & Beverly Burdette.  In ’87 we were National Champion with Don and Beverly’s filly, High Hopes Indian Summer.  In ’89 we showed two more of their horses and won a National Grand Champion Jr. Stallion and Reserve Grand Champion Jr. Filly.  From there one thing led to another and we were in the Miniature Horse Business.  At first we were just a training farm and bred just a few mares.  As the years progressed we obtained a few mares and were looking for a stallion.  We were showing a horse for Buck and Madge Glenn at the time and on a visit to their farm I spied a Mare named Komoko Lora Lee, I must say she was beautiful.  I was showing a winning young colt by their stallion, NFCS Husselers Star, so I was familiar with his quality.  When they showed me another young colt that they wanted me to show out of “Lora Lee” I silently flipped!  I knew I had to own that colt, I knew in my heart of hearts that he was special!  I took him home in training with the understanding that he was for sale.  After convincing Gary that we had to own him, which, after he saw him wasn’t hard, we purchased the young colt-GLENN'S GENERAL PATTON.

“Patton” has put our breeding program on the map, he consistently producers foals that are beautiful, elegant and extremely correct.  We were a training farm starting a new business and could not afford the luxury of buying the best mares in the country for him, although we purchased the best we could afford, usually with the help of Don & Beverly.

During this early time we raised a filly named, WF Vanessa.  She was sired by the stallion Bond Chauncy, which we owned at the time.  She was special and won many championships in the few times she was shown, we kept her and it all came full circle in ’99 while two of her “Patton” foals took her to a Reserve National Champion Produce of Dam win!

The first time that “Patton” won National Champion Get of Sire in ’97 we were thrilled at the honor bestowed on such a young stallion.  To repeat this win in ’99 and again in 2000 makes all our dreams come true and seems to support the direction and the quality of our breeding program.

No other stallion other than the great Buckeroo has won the National Champion get of sire three times. No stallion in the history of the breed has produced get that have won as many National Grand Championships in Halter as General Patton.  So as not to be caught sleeping we have added to our stallion power by purchasing the stallion, the Buckeroo son Little Kings Buck Zeus. Each one of these stallions has added another dimension to our breeding program and the Zeus-Patton cross is fantastic. It has added what we want in show horses of quality and have added to our winning ways.  Zeus’ first foal has already been named a Reserve World Champion. I now have a budding new star on the horizon, WF Zeus White Lightning, aka Popsicle.  He is the epitome of our breeding being sire by Buck Zeus and out of one of our most beautiful Patton daughters we are anxiously awaiting his first foals in 2007.

Besides Don & Beverly there have been many of our clients that have made our success in the show ring possible by intrusting us with their top animals to show.  For this we will always be grateful.

Our history reads like a Fairy Tale, but this “is the rest of the story”.  Little did we know that by hiring a young Mexican boy, Evelio Andrade, twelve years ago would have had such a profound impact on our lives and such a valuable benefit to the operation of Wind Flight.  Evelio came to us without working with horses but with a burning desire to learn the business!  He had the two most important qualities to become someone in this business, talent and a genuine love of animals.  We could never have found someone so perfect for us. He has grown with us and we have shared our lives together, from the courtship of Norma and their marriage to the tragic lose of Norma in a car accident, Dec. 23, 1997.  Norma will never be forgotten as she still lives in her daughter, Melissa! Evelio has been very lucky to find another wife, Ladis, one of sweetest people you have ever met. They have given Melissa a little sister, Emily. We are truly a family and the girls are the Light Of Our Lives.  Many of you probably saw Melissa at four years of age win National Reserve Champion Senior Gelding, 7 & under at the ’99 Nationals.  She has repeated this win each year since with several horses.  Even though Evelio doesn’t work here any more, his dedication to our horses and our clients was an integral part of the establishment of our show division and the over all success of Wind Flight.

Another very important part of the Wind Flight History in the partnership of Will and Martha Hickham on our stallion, Glenns General Patton.  There is no one that we would have undertaken a partnership with other than ERL Miniatures.  Their philosophy and love of their horses mirrors ours.  Not to mention they are some of the finest people you will ever meet.  Since the partnership of Patton we have continued several partnerships of the great producing Patton son WF Spectacular Bey.   With the foaling of a young bay pinto stallion, ERL Voltaire we were able to continue the success of the Patton breeding when he was named World Grand Champion Jr. Stallion, followed by being named the World Grand Champion Senior Stallion.  Voltaire is sired by the General Patton son, WF Sweet Revenge.  We anticipate more of these outstanding wins in our future.

Our history could not be complete with out mentioning Jane Macon.  She was the second Miniature client I ever had and is still a client and a dear friend.  She has entrusted many top horses to me for training and many of them have been named World Grand Champions.  Starting with Little Kings Locomotion and even down to Alamos Streakers Morian Wind.  Much of this history could not of been written if it had not been for Jane.  A dear friend forever and we are still looking to much more success in the future!

Even though now Gary and I have split our partnership, he will always be known as the nice one at Wind Flight!  His contribution is well known to the Miniature Horse people and will always be felt in the future success of Wind Flight.  I wish him much success in his future endeavors.  Many local friends have come forth to help me continue on the same path that Wind Flight has always taken and that is excellence in our horses and setting new an innovative standards in the Miniature Horse industry.  Allison Lively has been a right hand and friend for many years and aided me in the production of many of our large sales.  Rob “Bubba” Cheney and Eric Lee of Harmony Point Miniatures have been staunch supporters of our program and it has been fun watching them grown in their own breeding Program.  The list of friends and clients goes on and on, and we could never have succeeded in this venture without them.

THAT IS OUR STORY AND WE ARE EXCITEDLY LOOKING TO THE FUTURE!
